Hike 89 2020
September 9 - First snow hike of the season
On September 8th we had our first snow of the season, setting a record for the earliest snowfall in the past 130 years. It followed one day after also setting a heat record, so you could say Colorado weather is strange. Although the snow was early, we’re not complaining, we love the cold! We only got 3 inches in town, but the mountains got upwards of 10. We waited for the snow to accumulate overnight and the following morning on the 9th we went for a hike before work.
It may have been 30 degrees with some light sleet, but it was beautiful. One of my favorite things about hiking after a snowstorm is seeing all the trees covered in snow, and this particular place is my go-to snowy hike since it’s reasonably close to home with good views and lots of trees.
We began our hike around 6:30am after driving the dirt road to the trailhead and getting my car extremely muddy. The dogs were wearing their booties to prevent snowballs from building up on their paw pads as well as to simply protect them from the cold in general. It’s a good thing they love wearing their booties because they’ll be wearing them all winter.

Zeus loves to catch and eat snowballs!
After a good time in the snow, we drove back down the dirt road and got ready for work. One of the best parts about starting work at 11am is being able to get out in the morning and do hikes like these!
