Hike #100 2020

November 1

With the majority of the Colorado Front Range being in a stage 3 fire ban, national forests are closed even to hikers. This meant we had to drive farther into the mountains in order to find areas that were open to hiking. As this was hike number 100 for the dogs we went somewhere that has been on my to do list for a while. We arrived at the trailhead just as the sun was rising, and because the trail was covered in snow we outfitted the dogs with their boots and were ready to go!

Since this was an off-leash trail we allowed Maxi to roam freely as he can be trusted and never strays too far away from us, Zeus on the other hand likes to chase anything that moves so we kept him on-leash for his safety.

It was a chilly 14 degrees when we started hiking, though we warmed up as we made our way up the steady incline. The trail itself follows an old wagon road passing by remnants of an old mining town.

We reached an opening that had 360 degree views. Here there were several old log cabins with old mining equipment. We spent some time exploring this area and taking several pictures.

We had some fun placing Maxi and Zeus in one of the cabin windows.

Above is the view looking back down towards the trailhead. We hiked almost 4 miles with 575ft of elevation gain.
